In 1908, Albers began his professional career as an art teacher at the Kunstschule des Westfalischen Kunstvereins in Essen. He had three brothers Erich, Karl, and Herbert, and two sisters, Johanna and Anna. His father, Joseph Albers, was a miner and his mother, Anni Albers (née Breitenbach), was a homemaker. Josef Albers was born on March 19, 1888, in Bottrop, Westphalia, Germany. Born into a poor family in Bottrop, Westphalia, Albers began his artistic training in 1896 at the age of eight. 
Josef Albers (1888-1976) was a German painter, sculptor, and graphic artist best known for his influential work on color theory, Interaction of Color. He developed a set of exercises that he felt would help students to understand the effects of color on each other. This theory was later expanded upon by other artists and thinkers, including Michel Eugène Chevreul, Ogden Rood, and Johannes Itten.Īlbers himself first started experimenting with the Interaction of Color in the 1930s. Goethe’s work was based on the idea that colors are affected by each other when they are placed next to each other.
Albers then provides a brief history of the Interaction of Color, starting with its origins in the work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He goes on to say that the Interaction of Color is not just a set of rules, but rather a way of thinking about color. Albers describes the Interaction of Color as a “method of applying color.” He talks about how he was first exposed to the Interaction of Color while working at the Bauhaus.
